Nairobi underground railway: Underground Rail Line Beneath CBD to Tackle Traffic

NAIROBI, KENYA — The Nairobi underground railway initiative has officially moved from years of planning into the implementation phase as the Nairobi County Executive approves the capital’s first underground transit system. Backed by a joint framework with the Executive Office of the President under the Nairobi Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit System (NMRTS), the ambitious project aims to overhaul public transport and rescue commuters from crippling daily gridlock.

This landmark decision comes as chronic traffic congestion continues to cost the economy billions of shillings annually through lost productivity, wasted fuel, and severe commuter delays. For millions of residents navigating the metropolis, the approval of the Nairobi underground railway marks a historic turning point toward modernizing urban mobility and transforming the city’s transport infrastructure.

Inside Phase One: Connecting the CBD and Eastlands

Approved during the 90th Nairobi County Executive Committee meeting chaired by Governor Johnson Sakaja, the initial rollout is designed to serve as the central backbone of an integrated multi-modal transit network.

  • The CBD Underground Corridor: The core component features an underground transit spine running directly beneath the Central Business District to bypass surface-level bottlenecks.
  • The Eastlands Line: Engineered to seamlessly link one of the capital’s most densely populated residential zones directly with the city center.
  • Multi-Modal Integration: The underground transit corridor will coordinate directly with existing commuter rail lines, upcoming Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, and other public transport vectors.
Ease of Commuting and Economic Relief

Addressing stakeholders following the executive approval, Governor Johnson Sakaja emphasized that moving past years of conceptual planning into tangible execution is essential for sustaining Nairobi’s economic vitality. Daily commuters and commercial transporters have long suffered under the weight of severe transit delays that inflate operating costs across sectors.

“This marks the beginning of implementation after years of planning to address chronic traffic congestion,” Governor Sakaja stated regarding the approval of the framework. newsportal.co.ke

Economic analysts note that cutting down travel times within key commercial and residential corridors will directly boost small business efficiency, reduce vehicle emissions, and improve the overall quality of life for urban workers.

Next Steps and Institutional Rollout

While detailed engineering timelines and architectural blueprints are slated for public release in subsequent phases, technical teams from the county and national government are already coordinating right-of-way logistics and preliminary site assessments.

As the capital steps closer to joining the ranks of global cities with underground mass transit, the successful realization of the Nairobi underground railway will depend heavily on sustained multi-agency execution and transparent public communication. follow newsportal.co.ke for more news.
