NAIROBI, KENYA — Riara Springs Girls School; Kenya’s academic prowess has once again taken center stage on the global map after a brilliant delegation of young female scientists from Nairobi’s Riara Springs Girls’ School completely dominated the 2026 International STEM Olympiad Grand Finals held in Rome, Italy.

Facing off against over 3,000 of the world’s brightest young minds representing 54 countries, the 34-student Kenyan contingent staged a historic clean sweep, bringing home an astonishing total of 44 medals. Their unprecedented performance sent shockwaves through the prestigious tournament, earning them a standing ovation at the grand awards ceremony in the heart of Rome.

The Medal Haul: Pure Academic Dominance

The International STEM Olympiad is one of the most grueling global academic tournaments, testing secondary school students across advanced competitive categories including Coding, Robotics, Mathematics, and Environmental Sciences.

The Riara Springs team didn’t just participate—they led. The final medal tally for the Nairobi-based institution included:

  • 5 Gold Medals in advanced algorithms and environmental engineering solutions.
  • 10 Silver Medals across robotics engineering and competitive physics.
  • 13 Bronze Medals in mathematics and computer science tracks.
  • 16 Honorable Mention Certificates for outstanding project design and teamwork.

The exceptional performance culminated in Riara Springs being named the overall best-performing female institution in the African continent and securing a spot in the global top five.

Breaking Barriers in Male-Dominated Fields

Among the standout stars was 16-year-old Precious Wairimu, who clinched a Gold medal in the highly competitive Coding category after developing a localized AI-driven mobile application prototype aimed at optimizing water distribution in arid areas.

“When we arrived in Rome and saw the massive teams from tech hubs like Japan, South Korea, and Germany, we felt the pressure,” Wairimu admitted, speaking to reporters including newsportal.co.ke via a celebratory Zoom call from Rome. “But our teachers always told us that code has no gender and brilliance has no borders. We went into the examination halls focused, and we proved what Kenyan girls can do.”

The historic victory has sparked immense pride back home, with the Ministry of Education issuing a formal congratulatory statement praising the school’s management and teachers for fostering an environment where young women can shatter stereotypes in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

A Viral Sensation and Homecoming

News of the sweep quickly turned into a viral celebration across Kenyan social media spaces, with parents, alumni, and top corporate leaders flooding WhatsApp groups and timelines to share the triumphant photos of the girls holding the Kenyan flag high against the backdrop of the Roman Colosseum.

The team is expected to jet back into the country via the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) later this week, where a massive heroic reception organized by proud parents, fellow students, and education stakeholders awaits them.

By conquering Rome, the brilliant young minds of Riara Springs Girls’ School have not only brought pride to the nation but have firmly established Kenya as a premier incubator for the next generation of global tech innovators and scientific leaders.
