Tahmeed Bus Crash on Mombasa Highway, 6 Dead, 41 Injured

MAKUENI / MACHAKOS, KENYA —Tahmeed bus crash; a dark cloud hung over the busy Nairobi-Mombasa transit corridor early Tuesday morning following a horrific multi-vehicle collision that left six people dead on the spot and 41 others fighting for their lives.

The fatal pile-up, which occurred shortly after midnight near the notorious Kapiti plains area in Kalama sub-county, involved a luxury passenger bus belonging to Tahmeed Express Company and two oncoming commercial transport trucks. Traffic on the congested highway was paralyzed for multiple hours as emergency response teams and local residents struggled to extricate victims from the mangled wreckage.

How the Midnight Crash Unfolded

According to a detailed traffic report issued by Kalama Sub-County Police Commander Patrick Gaitirira, the deadly chain reaction was triggered by reckless driving.

A commercial heavy-duty truck traveling from the Mombasa direction toward Nairobi reportedly pulled out of its lane to overtake a slow-moving vehicle. In doing so, it struck another truck from behind. The severe impact caused the second transport truck to lose control, veering violently across the center line and crashing head-on into the oncoming Tahmeed bus (Registration KDL 079S), which was bound for Mombasa from Nairobi.

The force of the head-on collision compressed the front cabin of the passenger bus instantly. Police confirmed that six individuals—including the veteran driver of the Tahmeed bus, the driver of the rogue truck, and four passengers on board—died on impact from severe trauma.

“There was an unsafe overtaking maneuver by one of the trucks, resulting in an unavoidable head-on collision with the bus. The impact was so severe that six victims tragically died on the spot. Our immediate advice to all highway motorists is to exercise extreme patience and avoid blind overtaking,” OCPD Gaitirira told newsportal.co.ke at the scene.

Emergency Response: Off-Duty Medical Staff Recalled

Following a flurry of distress calls from witnesses, Machakos County emergency services dispatched a fleet of ambulances to evacuate the dozens of wounded passengers trapped in the wreckage.

At the Machakos Level 5 Hospital, the sheer volume of incoming casualties forced hospital administrators and the County Health Executive, Justus Kasivu, to declare a red alert. In an unprecedented move, all medical consultants, surgeons, and nursing staff who were on scheduled leave or off-duty were urgently recalled to the facility to help manage the crisis.

Machakos Level 5 Medical Superintendent, Dr. Daniel Katua, confirmed that the facility is currently treating 41 casualties. While 36 patients are being stabilized for mild to moderate injuries, five remain in highly critical condition, suffering from severe spinal fractures, head trauma, and completely dislocated limbs.

In a heartbreaking detail shared by the medical team, one of the young children currently admitted to the emergency ward survived the crash but tragically lost their mother on the spot.

A Recurring Blackspot Sparks Public Fury

The devastating Tuesday morning crash has reignited intense public anger over the government’s perceived inaction regarding safety infrastructure along the primary transport vein.

Disturbingly, local records reveal this is identical to a tragedy that occurred exactly seven months ago along the same stretch of Mombasa Road near Konza City, which also claimed six lives.

Tahmeed Express has since broken its silence, issuing a formal statement offering condolences to the bereaved families and confirming they are cooperating fully with the National Police Service and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to establish full accountability. The wreckage of the vehicles has been towed to the Kyumbi Police Station as formal crash investigations proceed.
