Saba Saba Protest: Notice Served to Police for Nairobi March

NAIROBI, KENYA — Security forces in Nairobi are on high alert after a prominent civil society coalition officially served a formal notice to the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, announcing a massive Saba Saba protest scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

The two-page legal notification outlines plans for a peaceful but expansive public demonstration aimed at demanding accountability, an end to police brutality, and justice for victims of extra-judicial killings across the country.

The Route: From Jeevanjee to Parliament

According to the organizers, tomorrow’s march is projected to draw a crowd of between 1,000 and 3,000 human rights defenders, youth activists, and concerned citizens.

The procession is scheduled to assemble early Tuesday morning at the historic Jeevanjee Gardens in Nairobi’s Central Business District. Protesters intend to march peacefully through the city streets directly toward the Parliament buildings, where they plan to officially present a public petition to legislative leadership.

The petition demands a comprehensive independent investigation into recent security actions, the immediate prosecution of rogue law enforcement officers, and state reparations for families affected by unconstitutional state actions over the past year.

Civil Society Demands Police Protection

In compliance with the Public Order Act, the activist lobby group explicitly stated in their notice that the gathering will remain strictly peaceful. The organizers have called on Inspector General Douglas Kanja to ensure that adequate police security is deployed to protect the demonstrators from potential external disruptors, rather than dispersing the crowd.

“We have fulfilled all legal requirements by notifying the police command. We expect the National Police Service to uphold the constitution by protecting citizens exercising their democratic right to peaceful assembly,” a representative from the coalition stated during a press briefing in Nairobi today to newsportal.co.ke

Nairobi on High Alert Amid Security Concerns

As the city prepares for tomorrow’s events, business owners within the CBD have expressed mixed reactions, with some planning to operate under heightened vigilance to protect their premises.

Past Saba Saba commemorations have historically seen intense gridlocks and heavily deployed anti-riot units across major intersections. Security analysts note that the police response tomorrow will be a critical test for the current security leadership, balancing the maintenance of public order with respecting the fundamental constitutional rights of peaceful assembly and petition.
